Burnt out Kapex

Kapex 88 burnt out.
Has anyone had any joy with festool making a claim out of warranty. I had a letter from them to say they have identified a safety risk with saws older than 10years and they should not be left plugged in unattended and pose a safety risk.in small number cases the saw can become hot and start to smoulder, bursting into flames in some instances. If mine is one of those affected I can return for a new plug and a free safety check. I still have the saw and figured that given their statement what’s to say that isn’t what caused the saw to burn out. Surely as they know it was getting hot for some reason and the fact it can self ignite they could have caused the issue. At the time when it happened they said it could have been a unwound extension lead, blunt saws etc etc, generally not interested as out of warranty. Anyone else had this? I have had friends send stuff back to them out of warranty for estimate of repairs etc only to be hit by extremely high charges for its return. If I send the item back what’s to say what caused it to fail. It’s hardly a uncommon problem and the letter tells me that they know they have had a issue with some models produced. Am I unreasonable to expect a working machine in return?

This the first I have heard of an issue of it catching fire while being plugged in, but not in use. Maybe others can chime in with their experiences. The only failure I know of is with the motor and it is well documented. I ordered the part and repaired mine myself. It made it close to 10 years without developing an issue. I know of another one that is pushing 11 years. The part is around $250 if I remember correctly.
