TS-55 dado cutter
« on: July 27, 2023, 11:17 PM »
Just saw this on Instagram from CSP Tooling. It was a custom tool request. While this demo shows it with the side shroud off so you can see what it is, there's a custom shroud to fit on the saw.

That's awesome! If they make the panel grooving cutters similar to the Whitehill ones for the HK85 that'd be a killer product!

The first plunge saw manufacturer, which offers this as an accessory for their standard saw will crush the competition. Yes, there is HK85, but it's not a cabinet maker tool. And cabinet makers cut lots and lots of dadoes.
The shroud will have to be modified. Perhaps a larger window with a choice of snap-on flat (regular blade), or protruding (cutterhead) cover.

That looks a lot like a cutter from the Mafell MF26, which might do what you are looking for.

I'm glad I don't have enough money laying around to spend much time on Timberwolf's website.  [eek]  I just watched the product video for the MF26 and it's a pretty neat looking machine.

 - it completely removes the key point of a plunge saw - the safety it provides by the tool withdrawing into the cover

 - unless a saw is built with the lateral forces such an accessory creates in mind, it is very much unsafe even if a customer cover was fitted as the shaft is not designed for this. While with MDF it can be fine, with ply or wood one can easily get the saw grooving one's forehead instead of the ply ..

 - I can see someone making a dedicated plunge "groover" but the use cases where a plunge itself is desired and a fixed (and thus easier to control) saw is not applicable are very far in between.  EDIT: I see the MF26 already exists ... Ideally I would like to see something that can take standard 20/30mm shaft shaper heads.

 - Festool already sells a groove unit for HK85 and there was even one for HK132 before it was discontinued. The problem this hack is solving is calling for the HK 85 and 3rd parties offering custom cutter heads for it. That saw has the heft as well as the shaft strength for this type of stuff .. now only if HK 85 was not a 230V exclusive for our US friends ..

They show a custom cover for the cutter at the end of the video. It looks 3D printed.

Makita makes one too. It takes both standard and grooving blades.

Unfortunately, it appears to only produce a v-groove for folding drywall or aluminum panels. Maybe they plan to offer a flat cutting version?

The MF26 will actually produce a dado from 5/8" to 15/16" wide.

I have the MF26cc and it is an outstanding product. In addition its grooving capability is a tracks albeit with less capacity (smaller diameter blade) than the MT55cc.

I bought mine for the purpose of dadoes with the only minus being it cannot be as narrow as 1/2". There was discussion at some point about having a custom cutter made, but I don't think it has gone anywhere.

I have been thinking about buying the slotting head cutter to try out. I have not had a job requiring addressing curved surfaces, but would like to be prepared.

Here is the sales sheet

The demo video showing the multi-kerf blade was quite interesting.  I wish it had shown a little more about how to do the repeated offsets, but it was a demo rather than a training video, so it did its job by piquing my interest!
