New Veritas Surface Clamps

These look really interesting for those of us who own an MFT table, or use Dog holes. A bit expense at $59 each, but above table locking and quick adjustment and of course Veritas quality which rivals Festool.

Veritas Surface Clamps

Description:

This fast-acting surface clamp can be used anywhere you can drill a 3/4" diameter hole. The post has a wedging mechanism that anchors it firmly (horizontally or vertically) in material as thin as 5/8" (depending on the strength of the material), making it ideal for use in jigs and fixtures, e.g., sliding tables for saws. The clamp arm (which slides easily on the post when tilted, but locks at 90°) has a 2-1/8" throat depth and can grip anything from veneer to material up to 3-3/4" thick.

Anchor wedging is controlled by the brass knob on the post and clamping pressure by the knob at the arm tip. Used horizontally, the post collar acts as a material support. Used vertically, the collar is a rub ring that protects workpieces from accidental damage by the post rings. Precision machined from brass, steel and anodized aluminum, this is a versatile work support and clamp.

Has anyone tried them in the 20mm holes in the MFT?  I don't know how fussy they are about the diameter of the 3/4" holes they are designed for.

It doesn't seem very "wood-friendly". Looks like it will leave sharp marks. I wonder why they didn't fit it with a plastic protection.

I'll bet one could find a thin plastic sleeve from a tube of some kind that could slip over the bottom. It would protect the MDF and make up the difference to a 20mm hole. A slit in the side would allow it to expand easily. It would need to be about .015 thick, I would guess.

I had my hands on one of these at my local Lee Valley store yesterday and seriously thought about buying it.  I didn't -but I expect that I will purchase at least one on a future visit.  They seem to be quite versitile.

I am now the proud owner of one of these clamps and I quite like it.  But, without assistance, it is too small for the MFT holes.  I have been able to use it in my MFT by wrapping the part that goes into the hole with a rag.  This is somewaht tedious, but it works.

For a good review of the Veritas Surface clamp, refer to the following thread on the Candain Woodworking forum: http://www.canadianwoodworking.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17189
