When did Timothy "disappear" and how long after did the MW1000 appear on the market?

Perhaps a little history is in order (to the best of my memory).

There was a contest put on by Festool (not Festool USA) and Timothy's MFTC was his entry and he was the grand prize winner.

I am uncertain if he had immediately offered his plans for sale or when, but surely he would not have done so if there was some sort of agreement with Festool.  Likewise, if he was no longer allowed to continue to sell his product he would have continued to do so and would have explained.

Previously when questions came up he explained that he was from a family that was in the agriculture industry and he now had to devote his time to his family's farming operations.  Based on the videos he posted or linked to and the size of the equipment being used it is a larger operation and morphing to meet today's expectations.

Here is a link to the blog on his website explaining:  https://benchworks.be/en/news/i-quit-woodworking/

Hi, I'm sure you all see the same 404 attachment not found error but is there some trick I'm not aware of, some secret URL, etc., to get these to expand so I can see a zoomed version of the photo?

Would folks be interested in working up an opensource version of this design?

Alternately, in what way does the MW 1000 Mobile Workshop not work as an alternative?

Hello,

I recently tried to pay and download the drawings of the MFTC from Timothy's web site but it failed.

I contacted him by email but didn't received a answer yet.
I doubt I will receive an answer since it seems he has quit woodworking according to his website.

I am wondering if anyone would mind selling the drawings / manual?

Thank you!
Cheers.
Clo

First, Welcome to the Forum.

I sincerely doubt that anyone will sell you the plans whereas that would be a violation of copyright laws.

If he is no longer involved with his online sales and not responding to customers, why continue to show him as a Retailer?  This might be why people come here when their purchase fails and they don't receive any reply from Tim.

Thank you Peter!

Before I asked on the forum for the drawings I had checked in my country at the national institute for the protection of intellectual property and I didn’t find any official registered rights or drawings, neither under his name nor the brand nor the company.

Therefore I think there is no infringement to get them for private use.

If anyone has other ideas I'm interested to know.

Otherwise I’ll have to reinvented the wheel  ;)

Cheers.

Most everyone here is part of a signatory of the Berne convention on copyright which auto-assigns copyright on point of first publishing.  You're also very likely living in a signatory country - just FYI.

My MFTC plans say:

"These plans are for personal use, do not distribute, sell or share these with others.

Copyright @benchworks2013".

I thought resale laws generally trump copyright laws, as in if you purchased the property outright as opposed to leasing it, you own the copy you have and can on sell it legally so long as you don't also retain a copy, and all original source material is part of the sale.

Same as books, I can't legally photocopy the book I just bought and sell those copies, but I can certainly sell the book I bought.

This is a digital good.  One could not adequately prove the destruction of the original to the degree necessary to satisfy the requirement.

That said, I also don't believe that this is really a debatable point on these forums.

I have to believe that Festool USA, the owner of this site, would actively discourage anything that even remotely appeared to be tangentially related to a potential copyright violation or the resale or transfer of copyrighted digital goods.

We are talking about intellectual rights here.  The drafter of those plans owns the right to the design, he only sells the plans in digital or paper format as an illustration or explanation and the purchaser has the right to use those illustrations.  Never does he own the intellectual aspect and therefore does not have the right to redistribute or sell.

As the brother to an architect who has had to explain to builders that they can't get one set of plans and then build 5 houses with them (unless they bought a 5 home license in effect) and a wife who is an author who regularly has her works pirated, I might be overly sensitive to a situation like this, but it just shouldn't be shared or sold.

(Forgive me if I haven't used the exact correct phrasing.  The list is correct.)
