Curious where you get your saw blades sharpened - both for the circular saw as well as the Kapex.

Anyone have good luck with an online resource?

Tom has posted about Leitz in the past but the last time he posted about sharpening he said that he had switched to Quinn with equal or better results as Leitz with less hoops to go thru.

I would also check with your local cabinet shops and see if they have a local sharpener. I'm lucky that I have a local sharpener that does excellent work and is a dealer for most major brands. He picks up and drops off at the shop every other week so I don't have worry about shipping. Whoever you choose make sure they can correctly sharpen European blades not everybody can.

Yep, go with Quinn. I had them sharpen my planer blades last time. Just to see how they work out, I’ll send them a couple of 5 mm Domino bits to sharpen.

You should be very happy with their service.

You can fill out the online form, if you send them early Monday you’ll probably have them back by Friday.

I've used Burns Tools with good results. Seems like it took about 2 weeks round trip.

Ditto on a call to a local cabinet shop, you can bet they want a quality service and will likely recommend them to you.

Thanks Leaky and others for your recommendations! I almost reached out to Chip.

I was planning to send to Tom's recommendation in St Louis but started dealing with securely and properly packing them, mailing them, postage costs, etc and I ended up finding a sharpening service in Elk Grove Village here in Chicago - they sell Freud and Amana blades & bits and do sharpening. Can handle blades up to 32" in diameter.

Don't sharpen bandsaw blades but can send them out for sharpening.

Second generation owner runs the shop. Nice guy and very knowledgable. One week turnaround and no need to ship.

His fee on the blades was like $15-17 each for TS55, 8" and 10" Inca blades and a Kapex blade. Only the Kapex was the higher price. Like most shops, they charge by the tooth.

1A Saw Sharpening, Theyre about 5 min from my house just had them sharpen my Kapex blade and a Zobo bit. Did a very good job. I got a couple of blades to take to them this week.

Leitz has some hurdles. I used them because they are close. I gave them a try because they were only a day away via FedEx Ground. In order to setup an account with them you have to get them your business tax ID or SSN. This is required even if you are paying by Credit Card. I could see needing this for a revolving account where credit is being granted, but this is unheard of. I left it blank when I sent the form over thinking it was only if you were using a tax-exempt status to avoid sales tax. It is usual and customary to ask for this when claiming to be tax exempt. I had already sent the blades or I would have regrouped.

I used Leitz last week and the service was stellar. You have to give out your SSN or EIN, which seems crazy considering I paid by CC. You probably could just make one up. 3 Kapex and 1 TS-55 blade were $108. I included a return shipping label. I'm in NC and sent them to NC so shipping was negligible. Their communication was outstanding (many emails). Blades were returned with the teeth covered by a blue membrane and each in a Festool like cardboard sleeve. I will be using them again.

Price competitive to local shop as well as online shops.

If you can find couple of woodworkers close to you go with on this deal you will save on shipping and be very reasonable.

I am curious why no one has mentioned Forrest? I have always had great results from them. I have not had my TS55 long enough to need any of my Festool blades sharpened yet but they do great with all of my other blades.

I used Forrest sharpening for many years with great results. Unless they have changed recently, they will not sharpen festool blades because of the variable spacing of the teeth on some of their blades. I used Carbide Processors for the last blades I had sharpened.

I sent some blades to Forrest including a kapex blade. This was probably 8 years ago or so. It came back shape but out of round. Like they didn’t use the correct arbor spacer.
Since then I sent all my blades to LA Grinding in Burbank. Ca.

I think that if you contact Forrest you will find that they have changed. I believe that they bought new equipment a few years back to be able to handle FT and some other European style blade types. Talk to Tony.

Forrest sharpens my table saw blades AND my Kapex blades. I do think the kerf gets very slightly narrower after sharpening.

I send all my blades to Ridge Carbide. They do a good job, price is reasonable, quick turnaround. I send them all my TS, RAS, and MS blades that need sharpening when I get about 3 or 4 in need of their magic.

I use Brisbane Saw Service in Queensland. Drop off blades 7am on my way to work and pick them up a few days later. Always been excellent.

I have had two custom router bits made by Ridge. They are very good quality, and exact to specifications. Customer service for the custom bits was a bit old school but it was also very good. There is one person that handles the custom bits (perhaps the owner ?) and both times involved a phone conversation. In one case I had a molding piece that I sent to be copied for the bit. In the other I sent a drawing. Even though it was old school I couldn't be happier with the process and turn around time.

I wanted a particular blade from Ridge. They don’t ship to Australia. I contacted John Ferrie the owner and he arranged shipping for me overnight.

Great service - I imagine their sharpening service is similarly good.

For anyone in the Midlands of England, I've been using LM Cutting Tools (based in Langley Mill, Nottinghamshire) for years. Their standard rate is 8 pence per tooth and they always come back razor-sharp. I have 36 saw blades ranging from a pile of 48T x 160mm crosscuts for the TS55, right through to half a dozen 96T x 305mm for the DeWalt 780 - plus a few other sizes and quantities in between. It's staggering how many you get through when you do this for a living.

Anyone know of a good carbide blade sharpening place around Boston? I found Atlantic-Carbide in Somerville. Anyone used them or someone else around that area?

Freud has an authorized sharpener in MA called "The Sharp Tool" but it's a little far from Boston.

I want to avoid shipping charges both ways, it might defeat the purpose, price-wise.

Another one for Leitz. We were using a local "saw & tool" company and had been for many years. They ran into a problem a few years ago of something similar to what RJneal mentioned, egg shaped. After we complained about it, they did fix the problem with the offending machine and even replaced a few blades, but when it started happening again? nope. We're out. Time to find someone new. It really sucked though, because they would take saw blades, router bits, Forstner bits, even holesaws and carried a lot of new ones right in his van. So you could get another one while the first one was gone. We always maintain spares, but occasionally some do need replacing or you need a new router bit or bearing. This was very handy and he came every week. The Leitz guy is not as comprehensive, but the sharpening is much better. Of course in recent years, the internet has brought quicker/easier ordering too.
