HKC55: cutting precisely adjacent previous to widen kerf

The cut is for a Simpson concealed post base in a 6x6 cedar column 16 feet long.  Here is a video showing the hardware product, but the cut procedure is not discussed at all. 

The tongue or knife edge is 10 gage galvanized steel, and for that, the kerf, which is 5 1/2" deep by full width of the post, should be 0.155 inches.  Less and the fit's too tight and forced insertion might split the post, and more means a sloppy fit.

Dude perfect as in two thicknesses of the HKC55 blade.

So, can one make one cut to the marked line, the kerf right to the line, and then move the base one kerf thickness left, and cut again to accomplish this?

I don't see why not even though they botched their example.  [big grin]



I'd make one long maple shim the thickness of the kerf and cut it into 4 shorter pieces. Place a shim in the beginning and end of the kerf, that now becomes a positive stop. Place another shim next to the ones in the kerf, then position the anti splinter strip on the rail against the shims, clamp the rail, remove all 4 shims and make the cut.

Just remember that when you flip the post to make the cut on the other side, you'll also need to cut on the "other" side of the kerf so that everything lines up.

Yes the saw will do it. I would use it on a track, if you can.
