Title: FESTOOL 576200 OF1010 EQ ROUTER 1/4 to 1/2 collet adapter?
Post by: Pastie4604 on May 15, 2021, 03:53 PM
Hi all, I’ve ordered the OF1010 router but was wondering if there is an adapter that will allow me to use 1/2 inch router bits (as the ones I need come in 1/2 inch shank only)

Is this feasible or is it a dumb idea?

Thanks

Google collet extension for engraving, there may be something that large available. Runout however may be an issue.  [sad]

Thanks for the reply, the reason im asking is I build decks and i kerf the facia boards so that they can be bent to form a rounded deck, What I need is a way to trim the top boards flush with the facia boards with the router.

The boards are 30mm thick but every bit I can find is less than that unless it’s 1/2 shank

Any ideas

There is probably a reason it did not include a 1/2" collet. Get a bigger router.

Never do this. The 1010 router is not for 1/2 inch bits.

No one makes such a thing.    Festool would be more than happy to sell you an overpriced collet.

It's simply not possible.  The spindle won't even allow a 1/2' shank inside it, let alone a collet.

Hmmm...this is a tough crowd. [big grin]  My thought was that if you're in a pinch, an engraving extension may be a viable alternative if one is offered and more importantly, if it's of a suitable quality.  I don't know...never used one but for a quick fix, it may be an alternative. However inherent in that statement is that if this is something that you need on a repetitive basis then there are better/safer alternatives. Enter the larger router.

My first vision was this...a Festool router bit on the LH side designed for a 1010 router and a standard Bosch 1/2" router bit on the RH side. Which one would you feel most comfortable about spinning up to 24,000 RPM on a 1010 router? The 1/2" shank issue kind of recedes into the background...

Here's another consideration, an Amana 8 mm compression spiral bit 71 mm long. Could be guided by hand or by a template.

I'd call them and ask why they suggest it's for use only in a CNC machine.

For use in the CMS-OF router table only. Not something you want to use freehand.

As squall-line said, it’s probably a 8 mm collet. That’s the reason I suggested the 8 mm extended length bit.

Sorry to all the Pros here, me being a Noob! i now have colletts for 6mm and 8mm bits not 1/2

https://www.amazon.co.uk/WSOOX-Woodworking-Cutter-Tool-Straight/dp/B07TZ2Y9V9?th=1

but taking all the advise that everyone has given me I need to buy a 1/2 collet router so i can use over 30mm guided bits

thanks for all the help  :)

Three people told you not to do that.

here's some 31.75mm flush trim bits that are 1/4 shank

Three people told you not to do that.

I think he (or she, I suppose?) has come to the understanding that they need a true router with a native 1/2" collet.  I read this sentence a little bit quickly myself, but on second reading that's where it looks like usernumber1 is coming from (unless that was part of the edit).

Ok thanks, I’m (he) going to order the long 1/4 guided bit as that is exactly what I’m looking for, so thanks for the link as that saves me buying another router.

oh you're right, i didn't read the word 'router'. thanks for the correction

there still exists a solution for the 1010 with 1/4 you just gotta spend for the good bits. they can reach the 30mm requirement without buying another router. just mind the flex and be gentle!

8mm shanks look small compared to 1/2 inch, but they are nicely big compared to 1/4 inch.

Yes^^^

I always buy 8mm shank bits when I can get them. It's a bit tricky in the US, but Amazon UK has them and will ship them here.

CMT offers 8 mm router bits with replaceable knives. That could be the charm if you do lots of decks. Just stock up on the inserts and swap them out when dull. The inserts are also 2 sided so you just flip them around for double the cutting edges.

I got some bad news for you. Hitachi / Metabo just announced worlds first cordless plunge router - 36V - 1/2" collet - 6.6lbs just a little heavier than 1010.

If I were doing decks and needed large bits, this would be on my list for sure. there's no competition currently. they also have a mains adapter for all their cordless tools, which is also no competition

If you are in UK, there is literally no point in messing around with 1/4" bits unless you already have a huge collection from the times past. That is why OF1010 does not include the 1/4" collet in Europe and you can purchase it separately only.

8mm is the standard one these days with 6mm used for the specialist trimming bits which are not made in 8mm for size reasons.

There is literally no task the OF1010 can do you will not find 8mm bits for. All kinds of bits at 8mm are widely available at good prices once you search for them. It is twice (8/6,35^3=1,99x) as strong compared to a 1/4 shank and small enough to fit all but the smallest trim routers.

The mentioned CMT compound bits are excellent for commercial use but also do browse the Festool accessories and their officially compatible bits for the OF1010 on their web. It is very good if for anything to see what selection of sizes is available and considered safe for the OF1010.

That's news to me, thank you.

I have 1/2" shank insert bits from Amana in my big Milwaukee routers and a couple of smaller 1/4" shank from Infinity, but an 8mm version would be great.

Ya, I love all 4 of the Festool routers I have but there's something to be said for the Milwaukee 2 1/4 HP BodyGrip® and their 3 1/2 HP production router. I just have a hard time giving those up.  [smile]  Maybe sometime soon, I'm working on it.

Yeah, ever since I discovered the Body-Grip routers, I have had a couple of them. Not only is that shape and strap design really stable feeling, the clam-shell case is great too. Plus, like Festool, they have nice forged wrenches, not that stamped steel garbage, that everyone else has.
They are my preferred routers for solid surface work for sure. The biggest draw-back to them is dust collection. I do have an aftermarket base plate that attempts to do what the chip catcher on the OF1400 does, but it's not as good at it.
