For Kapex owners outside of North America: As a proactive precaution, Festool will be retrofitting Kapex KS 88 and KS 120 models that are more than 10 years old.  This does not impact Kapex models sold in the US or Canada.  For more information, please visit www.festool.com/retrofit

Good to know that those of us in North America are not affected.

Happy Christmas.

What exactly is going to be "retrofitted" . The motor, even the 220 V motors?

At Festool we are proud of the quality and durability of our products. The safety of our equipment and therefore of our customers is always our top priority. We would accordingly like to inform you today of a voluntary safety measure. As part of our ongoing product monitoring and quality assessment there have, in isolated cases, been serious indications that the aforesaid mitre saws, which are now more than 10 years old, pose a safety risk. In a small number of cases the saw became hot in places and started to smoulder, bursting into flames in some instances, while the saw was connected to the mains. This means that – even though no such report has reached us as yet – it is possible that a fire could develop in unfavourable circumstances, which could also jump to other objects and spread. Thanks to our careful documentation and findings, we know exactly which products might be affected.

Any affected components. Additionally, there will be a full repair service completed for your saw, so that it can be used and stored again without restriction.

So basically the 10 year old saw is going to be restored to like new condition? Hm, not bad. But the fire thing is pretty bad.

I just checked mine and it is deemed to be okay - did I just miss out on a new machine?

My KS120 has always been perfect and is almost the most used piece of kit in the workshop (the CT26 - bought at the same time does get used a bit more).

Well done Festool. It is not trivial doing something like this and it just reinforces the respect that I have for the company staff in Germany.

My 2007 Kapex is one of the "affected" machines, I registered for the repair and safetycheck and according to the email I will be contacted.
If I understood correctly the repair will take place in februari, and it won't take longer than 48h, without shipping time,  and I can still use the machine in the meantime, but keep it unplugged while not in use.

Just noticed this on the Festool UK site. Seem to have identified a problem with some 10 year old Kapex saws.

Details below. Looks to be going extra mile in terms of customer service.

Clear guidance on not leaving affected saws plugged in and unattended.
