New "Improved?" SYS-RB (SYS-CART)
« on: January 10, 2020, 10:53 AM »
Following up on my earlier post, I was finalizing an order with a Euro retailer when they pointed out the fact that the tried and true SYS-RB has received an update.

Old (495020):

New (204869):

The only reason the retailer knew anything about the update was that they encountered a 'discontinued' alert when they tried to place an order on my behalf for a couple of the old style carts. At first brush, I was fine with substituting the updated version for the old...that is, until I closely examined the specs.

The new version has a larger overall footprint.

Old - 520 X 360 mm

New - 508 x 396 mm

That's a problem for anyone (like me) who's existing setup relies on all my carts being the same dimensions. So, now I'm scrambling trying to track down more info (but there's nothing out there in terms of how the new compares to the old).

Also, I share the concern shared by @cpw over the robustness of the single-point T-Loc locking interface on the new version in comparison to the dual-point Classic locking interface on the older version.

So, @Festool USA - what say you? Are you able to provide the skinny on how the updated cart compares to the old; it's capabilities, drawbacks, etc.? Also, can we expect discontinued pricing on the older version?

I know I would have liked to have had some forewarning about a change like this (since it has knock-on effects) so I'll wager that others will want to be able to benefit from plenty of advance warning.

I much prefer the newer design from the looks... looks like it'll hold the MIDI sized systainer, be easier to clasp (I hate the classic double latches), and the handle is nice. Drawer slide to be able to rack it is interesting too. However, I'm surprised they didn't include the clasps to hold classic systainers at all... does this mean there is no longer a cart that can handle classic systainers (and Makita/other branded variants)? It's not like you can stack those on top of your T-locs.

TANOS (Festool’s sister company) still carries the original cart, be it with different lettering and blue instead of green ’highlights’:

Festool (at least USA) still has that cart as well.

The original (at least the earliest one I am familiar with) cart had four rubbery things that connected to the Classic Systainer cleats.

Whether or not it is an improvement depends on the user.  If you want to attach Midi footprint Sys then it is better. If not then it is worse because it has a bigger footprint than needed.

Quite like it myself. Makes Midi systainers more tempting, and I'd appreciate the extra width/stability, for when I stack a bit too high. Sucks for Classic Sys if that's what you got.

Thing I don't like about either is the wheels. Too small & too hard, they make a serious racket over anything not totally smooth, and they get caught up on the smallest of obstacles. I'd prefer 150mm and softer, like I changed mine for ages ago.

Thanks for posting.

I cued up the following to when the updated SYS-RB makes its appearance:

https://youtu.be/gO2IMgjZGvA?t=158

Sooooooo glad I opted to stick with the older version. With a normal width systainer on it, the greater width of the new version shows how much bigger it really is.

The 75x75 boxes shown in the organizer (on the top-right) do not exist on the german festool website.

So, @Festool USA - what say you? [C]an we expect discontinued pricing on the older version?

I say again, for planning purposes, @Festool USA can we expect closeout pricing on the old version of the SYS-CART?

I use 8 or nine midi, so I will probably be getting a couple of these. As a side note, I recently bought a couple Hikoki sustained carts.  They are like the older Tanos carts in that they are wider because there are side handles...less than $60@.

We will have the new (Tanos) Systainer3 cart in stock soon. It's available now for pre-order.

https://www.festoolproducts.com/tanos-83500064-systainer3-cart-sys-cart.html

Festool USA says we will not see any Gen3 (Festool) Systainers this year with the exception of a rolling change to Systainers for tools. The first tool to be affected will be the ETS 125 REQ in the coming months.

Shane,
What about Tanos branded systainer3?
Will they be hitting the states this year?

Ah, good question. I get the impression from Tanos USA that we may see the Systainer3 later in the year, but nothing definitive currently.

I have a similar complaint for the size of the wheels. Fine for interior work but wheeling to my truck, I am constantly getting hung up on the smallest things. What did you replace them with specifically?

Got them on eBay ages ago, pretty sure they were the ones linked below. They look identical to what I bought. In contrast to what I said before, they are actually 125mm not 150. But they make a world of difference with their larger size and bigger/squishier rubber treads.

And even came with spare rubbery things. But a pain to connect the bottom systainer to the cart. Although I think I've done so less than once per year with two carts.

Missed this earlier. So, will you be selling the "old" version at closeout pricing? Also, the link is bad.

@TinyShop, we turned off the link on our website after being informed by Tanos that they made a mistake about the new version being available now. We'll turn it back on once it becomes available to us.

No word from Tanos on additional discounts for the "old" version. We already sell it cheaper than the Festool version. It seems like they are low on inventory, so it may not need discounting to sell through remaining inventory. However, if there's an opportunity to give our customers a break on the price, we certainly will do so and announce it here.

Tanos is still selling the classic version. I don't think they are going to discontinue the T-Loc version.
