Just curious...

So what are you paying for plywood these days?

My local Menards prices are up about 50% or so.

Has anyone been forced to cancel or delay jobs do to the hefty prices?

Any thoughts if prices will drop within the next year?

I just bought two pieces of the maple. And $70.00 really hurt. Red Oak was almost the same. Poplar was not much cheaper.

These are crazy prices, but I havent lost a job yet due to them.

Actually those prices are down. Less than a year ago I paid $190 per sheet for just 'OK' quality MDO. With prefin and veneered birch / maple at about the same.

I'm starting to look like a genius for all the extra material I bought "so I'd have it"...

Some 10/4 maple I purchased in Nevada ~30 years ago then hauled (possibly back) to PA ought the be about seasoned by now.

Disassembled a couple 80/20 & plywood carts recently and I salvaged 2-3 sheets worth of 18mm birch ply, it's being repurposed into some new shop cabinets soon.

And the boss asks why I keep everything.

Plywood doesn't seem to be coming down in price and I need to go get another sheet of pre-finished Baltic birch this weekend. About to build a shed too, but thankfully I already have 70% of the materials needed, and probably have extra construction plywood even.

We just cut up a truck load...or rather a bunch of skid steer loads of oak logs to get rid of them. I so wish I had a giant bandsaw or at least an Alaskan mill to process wood rounds. I did keep two logs to attempt to process thru my small 16" Doall bandaw. Going to have to free hand them with a chainsaw first though.

"If it is FREE it is for me!" Recycling is the way to go.

@Peter_C the are quite a few folks around the country with bandsaw mills that will cut for you. Quite a few are still portable and they’ll come to you.

Thanks Ron for that I book marked it. My neighbor does rent a space to a guy who does GIANT redwood slabs and could do them, but then they aren't free, and I would have to trailer to him. I can't imagine someone coming with a mill cheap.

Things are silly enough that I just saw my local selling MDF at 2x8x3/4 sheets. Makes sense if you need only a little, but I never thought I'd see that.

It's a quandary for me. I typically buy full sheets even when I need a small amount, figuring I'll eventually use the excess, but storage is tight right now. 1/2" MDF 4' by 8' is <$50 at the local box, and north of $20 for 2' by 4'. Nearly 2X the unit cost to just get the small amount I need.

I have a large cabinet project in my workshop that needed 25 sheets of 5x5 3/4 Baltic birch plywood. Several months ago I went to three distributors in the Portland, OR area and found prices ranging from $110 to $152 per sheet. Because the distributors source this plywood out of Russia I was recently told that all their orders had been cancelled and the only material available was what was already in stock that had been ordered months before.

Yes. Some local governments here are obsessed with wood skelet houses, contrary to the 99% concrete inside, masonry outside, but as it turns out, most of that wood came from Russia or Bellarus. So I guess this segment will not grow that much in the near future...

I didn't buy any plywood recently, but everything non-plywood is going up too. The constant is that what gets created out of thin air ($,€,£,¥) goes down in value. That started long before the current Russian war in Ukraine, but Putin still gets blamed for it all.

Also a lot of stuff simply not available or with insane lead times. Shortages push potential buyers to stockpile in advance, exacerbating the problem.

I was hoping they might start carrying some alternatives but nothing yet.

This guy is talking about using Eucalyptus plywood for his projects.

The prices are nuts. however I have over 100 sheets of finland ply in everything from blue, yellow , grey. green .white and natural mapple. I bought it all a couple of years ago from the man's wife that imported it and she was unable to get rid of of it. So I bought it, now I feel that I must have done something right for once..... usually when I buy something to save money it never works out. lol.lol. Who knew that the Kakistocracy would make me look smart. lol.

I was picking up some drawer slides from my local dealer and asked about Appleply. He said was having a hard time getting inventory and thought they might be going out of business but wasn't sure. The website buyappleply.com also mentions supply issues ("Due to overwhelming demand and current global supply chain issues, we have limited inventory or are out of stock on certain items. Please check back soon for updates.")

He also mentioned he is getting stock of EuroPly within the next week but said 4x8 sheets will be priced somewhere in the $175 - $225 range.

Europly looks pretty good and I think it's the same product Kerf Designs uses with their cabinets.

Local distributor here in Northern VA is selling 5x5 3/4 Baltic birch for $123/ea. That's more than double what I woulda paid 2 years ago.

But they do have it in stock at least.

Seriously? 3/4" Appleply goes for $272 per 4x8 sheet. They don't sell it in 4x8 sizes, so that's the price for 2 4x4 sheets. And shipping is insanely expensive. Not a contender.

Regarding BB, my local Rockler has some 1/2" in stock for less than $50 per 5x5 sheet. I'll probably go grab a few later this week.
Local hardwood dealer wants $199 per sheet for B grade 3/4" BB. 1/2" is $177.

I was told the price went up due to Biden's sanctions since Baltic birch is made in Russia and we are now getting it from Finland - which buys it in Russia and adds a nice margin to resell it to US.

The sheets I get from my local hardwood supplier have a "made in Russia" stamp.
A lot of European countries have a bunch of forest. Pine boards at my local HD are from Sweden. Do they have birch trees of similar size and quality in Finland? The technological process and glue composition matters as well.

In our area this decision comes down to lack of availability. Back in 2010 when we we building our home we went full in on sustainable design, even to the point of taking courses and traveling to conferences to learn about best practices, and pouring over building science books.

Then we hit the hard wall of reality that materials were just not available locally and none of the contractors wanted to do anything new/risky. Even advanced framing was considered witchcraft.

We managed to incorporate a few "green" features but overall it was sobering. I still need to drive 1-2 hours to obtain prefinished ply, let alone anything exotic. YMMV

I actually made a few kitchens out of melamine-clad wheat straw PrimeBoard years ago, liked the product a lot and was disappointed to see it disappear from the market. Great if it's made a comeback, would recommend.

I stopped by my favorite plywood supplier (Mr. Plywood) in Portland, Oregon recently to check on prices and availability for 5' x 5' x 3/4" Baltic birch plywood. Prices had gone from $110 per sheet to $120 and their supply (at least what was out on the floor that day) was definitely less than when I last posted.

So far no one has cancelled any jobs.

2 sheets of 5x10 matched Walunt to skin a door--$2000.00 by the time they get to me.

Got an email that white oak was getting tight, I have 2 jobs coming up that need a lot of it. Had almost 30K worth of plywood and solids delivered last week for the jobs. One supplier said that was it they're out of white oak.

Good thing is I don't have to pay for any of this, my customers do---eventually....

While were at it, if there is anyone in the Colorado Springs area who would like to learn cabinet fabrication and other things, I'm looking for the right person.

Insulated a roof and used metal studs instead of timber frame to hang the drywall
With inflated wood prices it was about the same expense, but cutting it is dust-free and low-noise. And no crooked studs either.

The last time I bought BB it was $60 for a 5 x 5 sheet of 5/8 (15mm).

It is now $147/sheet.

7 sheets of plywood 3 layer pine 19mm
One sheet is high 205cm lenght 505cm.
They make me 24€by square meter more taxes.

In February I buy same product 6 sheets 32€ meter.

I don't believe price go down...i think grow up instead

As long as it is a quality sheet and the price works for you go for it.

We don't use red oak, but the rift sawn white oak sheeks I go this week were 144 a sheet when buying a bunk (38 sheets), 1/4 walnut MDF core was 162 a sheet, I needed 18.

Colombia has plain poplar-core sheets without the decorative top veneers in most of the common thicknesses. A 4'x8' of 3/4" usually goes for around $75 in Northeastern US.

Starting to see small declines here in San Diego (not including contractor discounts). A few pics of prices from a few days ago...biggest drops have been with BB. Same 4x8' 18mm sheets were priced ~$210 a few months ago.

Not sure BB will come down to reasonable anytime soon, it's not the normal inflationary pressures on that stuff.... apparently it ONLY comes from the Baltic (thought maybe we had started producing it here!).

getting ready to build a bunch of wall cabinets for the shop/barn, and have decided to just use 3/4" OSB. It seems to be stable enough, cheap, and it is actually a cool look too. Plus, easy to attach other things to the outsides and doors.

Hardwoods are expensive too.

Had some Airmiles converted e-vocuhers, and picked these up from a building center today for $100 Cdn:

4/4 maple x 9 ft;
1"x4"x9ft red oak s4s/fas;
1"x6"x 5ft red oak s4s/fas and
2 bottles of Titebond III (4 oz).

The 4/4 maple (rough lumber) was sold for $20 because it wasn't "in the system."

If I had to pay out of my own pocket, I wouldn't have shopped there. Or should I say I wouldn't be buying the s4s stuff. I usually get my rough lumber (walnut, cherry and maple) at a place that has more competitive prices.

Laying up your own panels with A-1 plain sliced veneers. This way, you can control book matching across a set of doors or wall panels. You can also get something a bit more substantial than the usual tissue paper thin top sheets the mills like to apply these days.

I've bought pre-finished sheets in the past and wasn't always that thrilled with the look, suppose it can be hit or miss. Does save a ton of time though.

That sounds like MDO (Medium Density Overlay) then veneered and finished.
That stuff is fantastic to work with. It has the plywood's advantages of screw-holding ability and lighter weight, along with the smoother/flatter advantage of MDF.

3/4 in maple is currently $75 - $80 / sheet here in Northeastern US. Just varies a lot by market.

I went last week to one of the big box stores to buy a sheet of 3/4” hardwood plywood.

Birch: $89.95 per 4’ x 8’ sheet.

Maple: $83.95 for the same size sheet.

I would have thought that the maple would have cost more than the birch.

It is that much or more here in the USA if you get the good stuff as opposed to from a big box. I recently was quoted $180.00 for 3/4" birch and that was furniture grade veneer, not Baltic Birch.

I've been watching Romex prices lately because I have a project coming up soon. I made the mistake of looking at price history (250' of 14/3 for under 20 cents/foot only three years ago seems insane), but it was mainly because I wanted to see if it was on its way down or up.

In any case, some of the more specialty stuff like 14/2/2 is all over the place, and has jumped 25-40% in the last two weeks at one of the big boxes (it's really not even in stock almost anywhere), but at least stuff like 14/2 and 14/3 have been relatively stable.

Even OSB is still kinda crazy.

Curious where you got yours at $200 per sheet. My go-to for plywood is Boulter Plywood and I see that they are around $250, so I'm guessing that's the other place you referenced. I'm at the southern end of Boston proper.

How was the quality? Boulter's is usually A-1 which means the back is pretty good (sometimes as good as the front).

Around here, plywood has gone down a little, in general, so its not too bad.

But for a project I am working on, I really wanted Baltic Birch. Its going to get veneered, but I wanted the stability and flatness of the BB.

Unfortunately, the only place in my town that sells Baltic Birch is Home Depot in the 2x4' size, which results in an incredible amount of waste for the sizes I need.

So I drove 2 hours there, and 2 hours back, for the privilege of paying $C178 ($US 134) each for a couple of 5' x 5' panels. Let me do the math - that is only 25 square feet rather than 32 sq feet of a 4x8 panel. And that place won't cut it for me. So I brought my circular saw and cut it in the parking lot so it will fit in my car.

Boulter is the “close by” place I was talking about. They are great but pricy, I think. They also mainly have surfaced hardwood, which again is expensive if you have access to a jointer/planer.

My new favorite place is Readers (see below). About 1 hour south from Boston. They are awesome!! Huge selection of rough sawn hardwood, some surfaced as well, very good selection of plywood. Top quality. Really nice family business. The rift sawn WO was A1. They can also make cuts for you if you need that. Highly recommend them.

My lumber supplier no longer carries MDF. Said he can’t make a profit on the stuff.

Home Depot and Lowes only carry 2’ x 4’ sheets.

If you want to use MDF for the center panel of a shaker door, you can get one door per sheet (assuming 40” wall cabinets.

1/2” is available in full sheets and costs less to use than 1/4”, but involves an extra step to reduce the thickness around the perimeter.

MDF bead board (primed) is available in full sheets and I see some people use that with Shaker cabinets, but it looks wrong to me.

My most recent doors were made using 1/2” thick plywood, which would still be cheaper than using 1/4” mdf.

Addendum: Also note that MDF used to come with a “calendared” finish on both sides. This is a final hard roller finish achieved by rolling between smooth steel rolls in paper production and I assume the same process is used for MDF. The result was that the flat surfaces were shiny and smooth and accepted paint exceptionally well.

The stuff I am finding now is slightly rough, and looks even worse when you apply a water based finish (looks like sandpaper). I used to like using MDF for painted projects because it accepted water based paints so well. Nowadays, I prefer to use plywood and if the edges are to be painted, then use filler and sand smooth (too much work).

I'm not sure if that was a pandemic restriction or a permanent change.

I wonder if Reader's in East Taunton is a reincarnation of Downes and Reader. It would be a 45 minute drive for me, compared to 25 minutes to Rugby ABP but seemingly worth it. Will definitely keep them in mind as I much prefer rough lumber to the surfaced stuff at Boulter.

Yes, I think that is correct. I don't know the name of the previous place but the owner of Readers hardwood supply used to own a different lumber yard, which was sold. He opened Readers after the sale contract allowed him to start a competing business. Based on what you are saying, I assume that was Downes & Reader.

You can certainly pick your boards at Readers and take as much time as you want!

Looking at the invoice, it says BB/BB (patches on both sides).

Prices for 2500x1250x18mm A/B beech and birch plywood are still high in my area. A sheet of beech is €244.89 (about $265.87 USD) and a sheet of birch is €266.30 (about $290.18 USD), with a maximum purchase of ten sheets per customer.

The best price I've seen at the big box stores for a 2500x1250x18mm sheet of birch plywood is €134.90 (about $147.00 USD), but the grade is BB/WG (suitable for construction applications).
