Looking for Good Online hardwood supplier
« on: February 21, 2012, 07:07 PM »
Looked at Bell Forest Products for supplying online hardwood, but they are on the east side of the States (expensive shipping) and i'am on the west coast. Anyone know of a good online supplier out west?

Thanks
Greg

I have only purchased from one of their brick and mortar stores (Berkeley), but you can order from them online.

I live in the upper desert area of Southern Calif. and there is no source anywhere near me, so I use Woodworkers Source in the Phoenix area of Arizona.
They ship via ups for most items:  they put together packages that can be shipped UPS.  For larger orders they ship via truck lines.
I have been pleased with the quality.  I am a hobbyist furniture maker, not a pro.  Their service is prompt as well.

Greg,

What kind of wood are you looking for?  I ordered a bunch of Birds-Eye from Bell and the shipping was not that bad -- they will work with you on combining shipments and there specail packs often have reduced or free shipping.  There are a couple of great hardwood dealers in So Cal too that have a good variety of specialty woods too that might be worth checking out.  I buy a lot from Strada Forest Products -- they are in Costa Mesa area and there is another dealer in Pasadena that specializes in some exotics (supplied Sam Maloof with a lot of his wood) and that might be worth a visit or a call...name esapes me, but I can track it down if you are interested).

I was looking for Birdseye Maple and Purpleheart or walnut. I want to make a picture frame for my wife. She has a large photo 30" x 20". Part of my problem is I have limited milling capabilities. I only have a surface  planer. Still need to buy a joiner and a larger band saw (I have 14") to re-saw materiel.

Bell Forest products has some 3/8" birdsEyes 4" wide but only 30" long. I need at lease 40".

I have a hardwood dealer (Cherokee Wood Products) very close by but they only sell 4/4 and 8/4 lumber.

Try Austin Hardwoods in Santa Ana -- they have Birds-Eye Maple too and for a frame, you can buy a smaller quantity.  It will be S3S or S4S and so you could resaw on your bandsaw and then run that side through the planer.  Bell sells project packs in smaller board foot quantities and often it is free shipping.  They will also have Purple Heart and every other exotic you can think of from Ebony to Zircote....prices are a little on the higher side, though...they have a nice Festool selection too.

I have purchased from Downs and Reader in Pennsylvania (and I WORK in a lumberyard in Chicago for a living).
They have GREAT material, sent me photos before I purchased it, and packaged it up nice for shipping.  I highly recommend them.

If you don't mind me asking, how much lumber did you purchase and what did it cost you including shipping charges?

It was a while back, but I bought about 125/BDF of Sapele Mahogany.
Shipping was only about $80 from Pennsylvania to Chicago.  And, with the price, even WITH the shipping, it was cheaper than if I had purchased it here.

I'm in Norcal, and just ordered from Wall Lumber (North Carolina).  The 20bdft packs include shipping and for Af. mahogany and walnut are a better deal than what I can get locally.  I was quite happy with my order - boards were straight and clear.
Current systainer to productivity ratio:  very high

Bought 10 bf of curly maple and 5 bf of Purplehart from http://www.woodworkerssource.com. Purplehart was 8/4 , has a slight bow length wise and some checking. The 4/4 curly maple is straight grain and clear but two of the boards have a twist.

So is this normal? I guess  the climate changes from phoenix az to So cal could cause the wood to bow and twist?
