GRK screws available at Lee Valley Toronto
« on: May 11, 2012, 10:11 AM »
I was in the downtown Toronto store this morning and they have GRKs on the floor. Don't see them on the website yet. I remember someone saying they were available at the Burlington store as well.

Someone should pick them up. Could be a nasty accident otherwise.

Hopefully HD will stock a wide selection of them -- great screws!

If you can't find them in stores, you can always look here

That is where I usually order them -- it would be nice to have a local store to drop in & buy them.

Concur.  Around here, very few companies carry them, and none carry the full line, despite what their sales monkeys want to tell the customer.  It really hacks me off to be told that a vendor has what I'm looking for, only to get there and find that the sales monkey was BS'ing me.

Questions, questions. Did these two places also have the bits available to drive them? What is that bit configuration called? And, that also leads me to ask. Why are they using that particular configuration? I can envision many places where the GRK screw designs could be used, but it's irritating to have to also buy a new set of bits to use them.

Each box comes with a 1" wire detent bit needed to drive the screws.  As far as I know all of their screws are torx drive.

Ron, my local Depots have the R4s, trim heads, cabinet, masonry and the shim screws.   I wish they carried the stainless version of the R4s and trim heads.

I know what torx drives look like (and even have a set), but I've never used any. I did notice the similarity of these screws to torx, but some reason, they looked marginally different. That was why I was thinking I'd have to buy a new drive set.

Hmmmm must be test for the HD's in your area.  Not here in the 55xxx zip code. Wish they were.

To further confuse things, the Home Depots here in the Washington, DC area are now stocking "Spax" brand not GRK. Their head is very similar to a torx#20 but is slightly different and it is better to use the bit they include in each box. That is easy for me as I have been buying them by the cart full. They are cheaper than the torx-head  "deck" screws that I had been using.  http://www.spax.us/en/mdf-hardwood-screws.html

My Depot stocks both GRK and Spax.  I've used both and I like the GRK screws better.  One thing I don't like about the Spax screws is that some are trox and some are a combo drive.  The torx head work pretty well but I don't like the combo head all that much, it tends to cam out much easier.

The only Spax screws I'll use is the torx drive. Some of my HD's locally carry them but my closest doesn't...boooo. I have seen a few HD's around that carry the GRK R4's but they're only #9 and I'd prefer 8's!

I ordered a mess of GRK's online and am very excited to use them!  I'm uncertain about the T15 driver and worried that it'll cam out quickly...time will tell!  Any experience with this?

Good to know. Thanks. Unless I am building a deck I don't really want to buy a box of a thousand from Fastenal.

I've been using nothing but GRK screws for about six months, purchased online due to limited selection at local stores.  Everything from #4 x 0.5" through #10 x 4.75".  Some boxes contained a driver bit, plus with my second order I also received a separate box of bits of assorted sizes, so haven't needed to buy any new bits.  No cam out, and I have yet to wear out/break/throw out a single bit.  I use T-18 so no shortage of torque of the screw head.

In the last two months I have bought and used over 1000.00 in GRK screws.

From the RSS, R4's to trim heads.  I love the screws and my lumber yard around the corner stocks them all.  I feel I am at least 50% responsible for their stock.

I have had several words with the local rep and manager of the yard, letting them know I need them to carry a good selection of screws.

I keep forgetting to check my local HD -- somehow I have deprogrammed myself to check on "screws" at HD (a double negative??).

I find it hit and miss with Home Depot.  I recently moved from Ohio to Illinois.  My HD in Ohio had GRK screws.  The one in Illinois has never heard of them and don't think the company stocks them.

Lee Valley Tools has been selling Spax screws for some time and just to confuse things further, their Spax screws use a POZIDRIV type of driver.
