Following up on an earlier post: Does your thick wood edge banding look like this with clearly visible layers? It's 1.5 white oak from Edgemate. Too thick for the Conturo, I think, so I want to get 1mm. Is the joint between the layers always so clearly visible?

Thanks!

Yes, any thicker coiled wood edgebanding looks like this to varying degrees depending on the species. Only straight stock is made from a single piece of wood.

This is something that is happening in the last 20 years.  There may be some vendors that are not laminating, but they will have a hard time competing.

I do recall non-laminated, edgebanding.  The finger joints were not reliable.  But for flat surfaces it would work.  I did a google search  and there does not appear to be any vendors around selling that anymore.

You can find 1/8" thick boards and rip them to width and attach with glue.  It is difficult to find in longer lengths, but 3 foot and 4 foot boards are available.

Years ago I  applied wood glue to trim and allowed it to dry and then applied it with an iron.  It worked fine.  But I don't remember what type of glue I used.

It's not normally that obvious. Seems like the glue is exceptionally dark in this case? Most of the stuff I recall had more/thinner layers too. As mentioned by Packard, there will be finger joints on the roll, the veneers can only be so long.

1mm seems to be the "sweet spot" for edgebanding. It is thin enough to not be "in your face" as it sits there, hopefully blending in. Also not so thin that causes problems like telegraphing and tearing. The .5mm stuff is terrible. I have seen some .7 that was marginally better, but stick with 1mm and yoou will get the best overall experience.

I run the same 1.5mm edge band from Edgemate through my Conturo all the time. No issues.

Yeah, "they say" it is supposed to be able to handle up to 2mm, with PVC at least? I don't know about wood veneer though?
I have only used a Conturo one time, during a demo, years ago. It is a great machine, but having a huge commercial edgebander in the shop, makes it less valuable to me. If it could handle 3mm PVC, I would probably already own one, but that stuff is tough to work with.
