It's not normally that obvious. Seems like the glue is exceptionally dark in this case? Most of the stuff I recall had more/thinner layers too. As mentioned by Packard, there will be finger joints on the roll, the veneers can only be so long.
1mm seems to be the "sweet spot" for edgebanding. It is thin enough to not be "in your face" as it sits there, hopefully blending in. Also not so thin that causes problems like telegraphing and tearing. The .5mm stuff is terrible. I have seen some .7 that was marginally better, but stick with 1mm and yoou will get the best overall experience.
