Does anyone use these to hang pictures?  I had a frame shop and never came across them.

I used this type.  They are used with hardened and ground nails that make smaller holes in the sheet rock and never bend.  For plaster walls, I pre-drilled the holes and simply pressed the nails in.  I would break off the brass head and use one of the nails as a drill.

I tried them but don't use them very often.
They tear up plaster
Don't seem to hold that well in 1/2" rock
Work real nice though in 5/8" rock.
For light stuff I use the brackets and nails you show.
For heavier stuff I use the metal silver or plastic white drywall anchors that # 8 or 10 screws go into. Rare I use plastic anchors, just don't trust them well enough. I use a lot of butterfly anchors.
Anybody tells me it came out on its own or under load I know they are full of BS

I have a prefernce for the pinned type that @Packard mentioned.  When I need to support more weight, I use Toggler picture hooks with attached expansion anchors.   [smile]

Funnily enough I had to pickup some hooks just yesterday to hang some pictures back up on the newly oak panelled walls, but didn't want to leave gaping holes in the wood if we changed things, so went with the 10kg pin hooks. Plenty strong, and smallest possible hole that can be covered up easily if need be.

Saw those claw screws there, and immediately thought, no way!

Those look very similar to the screws used in the Mod-eez connector system. They are essentially a keyhole but made of metal, rather than the wooden frame itself. They are much stronger and can be purchased in a few levels of grip, from easy to permanent. They make them that are actually "one time", which is more for "no visible fasteners" assembly than picture hanging.
The screws are available separately, because there are various lengths.
I have a stash in my random hardware drawer

If you need to move your pictures around, I recommend a track hanging system such as Arakawa. My wife is an artist and so we are frequently shuffling pictures.

That makes me think of the somewhat similar screws that came with a rail system I put on the wall at my sister's home. Oddly enough also came supplied with Fischer DuoPower wall anchors (yiippee) that were perfect for the concrete wall.

I hate the f|_|ck out of nails. Super annoying to remove.
