Which sanding pad?
« on: January 12, 2022, 10:17 PM »
Hi all,

Noob to the group, so I hope I am posting in the right forum.

I have an ETS 150/3 I bought years ago. The grippy thing on the sanding pad detached, so I need to replace it.

You'd think this would be easy.

When I go to FestoolUSA.com and look up ETS 150/3, the accessories link sends me to this (and similar ones of differing hardness).

But this is mine. It looks different.

Mine looks like this one (492286), and FWIW, has the same numbers/letters on it. But Festool web site says this is for  ETS EC 125, LEX 125.

What do I need? Thank in advance.

Best,
Aram

The ETS 150/3 and ETS EC 150/3 are two completely different sanders.

One uses a twist-lock attachment for the sanding pad (ETS 150/3), the other uses a screw (ETS EC 150/3).

The link and the picture you posted are both for a 5 inch pad, which goes on an ETS EC 125.

Are you sure you have an ETS EC 150 rather than an ETS EC 125 that was stored in an ETS EC 150 systainer?  Can you post pictures of the sander itself?

Thanks for the reply. I sure can! The pad mounts with a screw.

The ETS 150 uses one of these pads easily selectable from the Festool website.

Thank you for the reply. Those are the ones in my first link, i believe. But they look entirely different from the one I removed, notably the shape of the recess where it attaches. Does that make sense? (Meaning did what I say make sense). Is it possible that more recent 150/3 sanders use a different pad than older ones?

Thanks again,
Aram

Can you photo the sander side of the interface without a pad, and measure the pad diameter you used till now ?

The pad you showed is a 5" one from the look of the interface to the sander. The (current) 6" ones have the "wings" in for better support. I guess it is possible the sander was serviced so it would have the "simpler" 5"-style  interface, without the wings.

As for ETS EC versus ETS, I believe the newer ETS also switched to the one-screw style pads at some point and will actually accept an "Airstream-style" pads from the ETS EC series. Though the pads may not be fully balanced ?

I have the WTS150/7 which used its "own" pads initially simliar to ETS 150 series and now have the standard "ETS EC" 150 mm Airstream 2 pad on it with no issues. Go figure.

End of say, best drop a note to Festool service for advice, ideally adding a photo or two of the sander side and the serial of the tool.

Ya, now I understand after looking at your link.  [smile]

Your pad has the name Festo on it so it and the sander are quite old. I'm thinking that some time ago Festool changed the pad mount from the Festo style like you have to the 2-winged version that they use now. If that's the case, I'd expect the current 2-winged version to still mount to your sander.

Interestingly enough this is the same situation that exists on the newer ETS EC sanders. The 125 version has the Festo style mount while the 150 version has the 2-winged pattern. So, both 125 & 150 pads can be mounted on the ETS EC 125 sander.

Thanks, everyone. I took the advice here and emailed Festool customer service. They told me to get the one labeled for 150/3, said yes, the design has changed over the years. I have one coming from Rockler. We'll see!

Thanks for your help,
Aram

Just to close this out, in case anyone else needs to know, this is the correct series of sanding pads.

Thanks again, everyone!
