Recon?
« on: October 14, 2022, 06:55 PM »
How does the Recon system work? How do you know when something pops up? Is it just one tool at a time? or is it just because that's all there is right now?
s of this post, it shows RO150, that's it.

I might buy a OF2200 or a DF700, if they came up.

Right now they post one item for sale, but you can see the que behind it-so you can see the next 6 or 7 items.  Then when you are not looking, they sneak something in. FOG member 4nthony in southern California has done a good job creating a way to track the items, and FOG member Goingmyway is good at posting what is up currently.  I think 4nthony has an app to notify you, but it does not work on my rotary dial flip phone.

In the past they have done it different ways.  The discount used to be 25% standard, although I picked up a drywall gun with batteries at 50% off.  They used to post one item at a time with no indication of what would be next.  Another time it was open season-everything was for sale at the same time.

OF2200 routers and 700 dominos do not come up very often, and go rather quickly.   Then the site will get stuck on a drywall sander or other item for a long time.  When they were posting one item at a time with no hint of what was next, I think I bought 4 items in less than 30 minutes, including the 500 domino and 1400 router.  That was an expensive day.

I know you have talked about retirement in an earlier post.  You need to buy these will you are still working so you can write it off on your taxes.

According to the guys mentioned above, what seems like a single tool taking a long time to sell is sometimes multiples of the same tool.

Dude. You're speaking my love language.  Ha. [big grin]

As mentioned, there's the Recon thread maintained by @GoingMyWay. If you subscribe to that thread, you'll get an email letting you know there's been a new post in the thread. Click the email link and you go to the start of new posts to see what was posted.

I wrote a small program that posts to a collaboration tool called Slack. If you install Slack on your phone and join the workspace, you'll get instant notifications whenever a new item is posted along with information about the SKU, whether or not it is current or discontinued, pricing, discounts, and what catalogs the SKU has been in (back to 2011). There's also an option to see what's next in the queue. Click the tool name in Slack and you'll go straight to Recon. Click the active/discontinued link and you'll go to FestoolUSA to verify that my logic is correct and the tool is active or discontinued.

The notifications on your phone will look like this, depending on which "channel" you're looking at. The Recon link in my signature will take you to a post with instructions on how to get going. If you have any questions, let me know.

Lock screen notification:

Slack message contents:

And yeah, there can be anywhere from 1 to 50 or more units available for any given tool that is posted.

The biggest caveat when seeking out a DF700 (or 500, or one of the battery tools) is whether you want the Set version or not.

Just like people have missed noticing if a CT MIDI or CT MINI is an -I version (newer model with Bluetooth and buttons) or not, the "Set" vs "Plus" is another source of confusion/consternation.

I held out for a 700 Set even though I already had more than one 500 Set just in case I ever needed to sell one in the future, I would have the wings and other bits to go with it.

That is kind of why I am looking into some of these tools. I could potentially sell off some of my "multiples", as I won't necessarily need them. The problem is that they really don't have much in the way of resale value. (The Makita compact routers and Bosch Colts) I'm not going to "give them away" because they won't cost me anything to keep, other than space, and that's not a problem at all.
OF2200, DF700, and I'm still thinking about LS130. I think a little bit of me wants it because it's discontinued, but that is also what is holding me back. I am concerned about pad availability in the future. The company I work for had one, in the old shop, but never replaced it. It was mostly used by the solid surface guys for sanding cove backsplashes. The guy who runs that department now doesn't like them though, so they didn't buy a new one.
I am planning on doing a lot of home interior work on my house as part of my retirement "occupation". I did a major remodel about 15 years ago, but didn't touch the kitchen at that time. (it's horrible) You know how it goes though, the cabinetmaker has an ugly kitchen.

I am a little confused by the one and done site? I have been paying attention to what is there in the queue, waiting/refreshing for it to change as the first item sells. Simple enough. This last night/this morning the RO150 was up, HPC 18 next, MFK700 and so on. Now there is a TSC55 and CT48 in front of the HPC and the RO150 is still there behind them?
Do they just randomly swap things around, if the first item is not selling quickly enough?

Yes, they will shuffle things around.  If that 420 Jigsaw does not sell, it may get moved to the back of the line and the next time will pop up.  Or they will throw some new item in there.  The LS130 sander popped up like that a few weeks ago.

I don't have a need very often for the LS130 but when I do it's absolutely invaluable.

I'm doing a reno with a lot of Euro Oak herringbone on the walls, and every so often I need to sand along the inside edge of boards and it is just brilliant! I bought the extra pad kits when I got it probably 8-9 years ago I think, but I'm still on the original pad and haven't gone to any great effort to look after it.

I have also used it heaps on panelled doors which works a treat. I've also made up a 3D model of the base so I can machine some bases out of polycarb and PU when I have time.

I was under the impression that the pads deteriorate over a period of time. It not the use the hurts them, just chemical reaction, due to age. Stocking up may not be so helpful?
I'm having a really hard time not buying the MFK700 that is up on recon right now.

The CT 48 missed being called into action. Here's the transition earlier today from the TSC 55 to the MFK. Its getting a bit random on the order of products.

The One and Done page has a filter for sorting, so it's possible there's a sort happening on the server as things sell that is different from the default display sort of the queue. If there is a sort, I don't think it's one of the sort options shown on the page.

If you're on Slack and waiting for a specific tool, look into setting up keyword alerts. If setup correctly, you should only get a notification for whatever keywords you define.

I was just thinking about this over the weekend; as we get closer to November, keep an eye on Recon at the end of the month for Black Friday.  In the past, they've tossed a LOT of extra stuff up and opened the orders to anything on the site until the item is sold out, instead of the queue system.
