subject says it all, is there an improved version of the 1010 on the horizon?

Yes, there is a 1010R that has already been released in the EU.  Search on here, there are already reviews from people.

Just the other day, I sent an E-mail to Festool asking when it would be available over here.  Here is their responce:

Thank you for contacting Festool. The OF1010R is not available at this time in the North American Market (USA / CANADA). Not all tools and accessories are released in every market at the same time. At this time there is no information as to when this tool will be released in the North American Market. To stay informed on all Festool products and news you can sign up to the newsletter that will keep you informed on new tools and accessories being released.
