Li-ion battery interchangeability
« on: June 28, 2013, 06:02 AM »
I know the C15 and T15 Li batteries are interchangeable, but is it possible/advisable to use a T15 battery in a C12? Just curious.

Thanks.

You can only use batteries with lower voltages in the newer battery drills. For example the T18 can use 15 or 12 volt batteries and the T15/C15 can use 12 volt batteries.

Carvex and Syslite are happy to feed from any of the batteries BTW (excluding CSX)

Ah, OK - that makes sense. Many thanks for the prompt responses.

I am in the process of making a video of the BHC18 Cordless Hammer Drill. I seem to remember being told that Festool batteries are interchangeable provided they fit on a given machine.

So, I put a 15v battery from my PSC420 on the BHC18 and it worked. I then put the 18v battery from the BHC18 on my (15v) PSC420 and it works fine.

Can a Festool technical person please assure me that I can tell people about this?

Many thanks.

I think your 15v PSC420 is also for 18 volt or else it wouldn't have fit. Festool key the batteries with plastic tabs to make sure they only fit on the proper machines.

Yep - no such thing as a 15V CARVEX ... just a CARVEX kit with 15V batteries as an option in case you only have other 15V Festools.

Many thanks Alex and Kev.

I had a call from Festool UK's John Street (really helpful chap) and he said that it can be done as long as a battery fits on a machine then Festool expect it to work.

Peter,

The batteries are "keyed" so that they only fit the machines they work with. The cordless Carvex is an 18v machine. If yours came with a 15v battery, that's surprising.

My Carvex i bought as a Tool only (no Batteries or Charger) when i purchased it, I believed it to be a 15V only and the Festool Australia website stated as such and so did the systainer.

Believe me i was very happy to discover the 18v battery from my DRC18/4 fitted the Carvex.  There was definitely no mention of 18v compatibility in all the information i had looked at about the Carvex.

Festool with the use of EC controlled motors is creating a tool line in which various tools can use batteries of different voltages and amperages so long as the battery has enough minimum Amp Hours to power the tool.

The 2013 Festool USA catalog had a battery comparability chart in the Drill section.

The Battery Charger TCL 3 - 499412 can charge Festool NiCD, NiMH and Li-ion batteries.

One can check their tool's instruction manual as to what batteries the tool can use.

From the owners manuals:

T15 Batteries:
Battery Pack    BPC 12 Li      BPC 15 Li    BPC 18 Li
Voltage        10,8 V               14,4 V    18 V
Capacity        3.0 Ah               3.0 Ah    3.0 Ah
Weight            0.49 kg (1.08 lbs)    0.58 kg (1.28 lbs)    0.68 kg (1.50 lbs)

C Series Batteries:
Battery pack    BPC 12 Li - 1.5 Ah    BPC 12 Li - 3.0 Ah    BPC 15 Li - 3.0 Ah
Voltage          10.8 V                10.8 V         14.4 V
Capacity          1.5 Ah                3.0 Ah         3.0 Ah
Weight              0.31 kg (0.68 lbs.) 0.49 kg (1.08 lbs.)    0.58 kg (1.50 lbs.)

It looks like the BPC 12 LI - 3.0 Ah and the BPC 15 Li - 3.0 Ah batteries can be used by both drills.
