DF500 Domino - How Warm is Too Warm?
« on: September 09, 2023, 11:20 AM »
I purchased a new DF500 Domino a couple weeks ago and have only used it lightly a couple times. I was using it this morning (5mm cutter, set for 15mm plunge) on 3/4" pine plywood and noticed it got warm fairly quick. After 16 plunges the tool body felt warm and IR thermometer near cutter read 90*F/32*C (pointing to warmest spot in attached pic). Shop was about 70*F/21*C, is this normal operation or is this TOO warm?

Yes I was using dust extraction and no obvious signs of buildup, blockage, or issues with cutter head. I know 90*F isn't super hot I was just surprised it got warm so quick. Knowledgeable insight is appreciated. Thank you.

90°F/32°C seems pretty normal to me.

32c is what your body temp is, so given you hold the DF500 around the motor body that's a perfectly normal operating temp.

Didn't take any measurements, but I have noticed before the Domino's body gets warmer than most other tools quite quickly. Doesn't increase much from there so I assumed it was normal

Thank you for the feedback everyone. Sounds like there isn't any cause for concern so I'll keep at it. You can never be too careful with a new $1,200 tool  [wink]

I'm sure there is some kind of friction going on in the complex gearbox, which creates some heat. As has been said by the others, it warms up initially then it never goes up from there. Perfectly normal.
