Hi everyone. (New member introduction)

Hi everyone,

My name is Oliver and I'm an almost 29 years old tool-nut from Germany. While I decided to cut my "internet-time" very, very short in the beginning of the year, left a lot of forums I was very actively participating in, quit Facebook, Instagram and deleted my personal website - I was still searching for a forum about (Fes)tools, show & tell, woodworking and home improvement projects in general with a friendly and funny nature. Think I've found it. :)

So how did I get here?

The last couple of weeks were rather unpleasant, I had a tool-failure (wire detector) which resulted in a damaged phone line, upset neighbors and a pretty high bill. To cut a long story short, I know now that lead encased copper wires cable with very, very low voltage is not the wire detectors friend, add a door frame to the mix and it's close to undetectable (no matter how good the tool is) - so I'm not as mad on the tool and the tool manufacturer anymore as I was before. Still I wanted change, and with that in mind I went to a new to me tool store I knew had Festool.

The tool I use most often is a compact cordless drill/driver so I guess it's pretty obvious that my first Festool is a CXS, I bought it yesterday. And so far I'm really pleased with it's ergonomics, fit, finish and precision. Also I really like the angle attachment which my other currently used tools don't have and I look forward to working on my first project with it.

Well, maybe a few words on me - I love & enjoy high-end tools, knives, watches and awesome food and fine dining, I would describe myself as a, sometimes luxury, lifestyle connoisseur mixed with a passion for handcrafting / home improvement.

My ideal place would be a nice cabin on the foot of some mountains, small river close by, couple of dogs running around and at least a 1 1/2 hour drive to the next town. Although it would be nice to have some electricity and internet ;) (One can be dreaming, right?)

So some more on the tools I use/have. All my electrical tools (except the CXS ;) ) are Bosch Professional - rotary hammer, jigsaw, reciprocating saw, oscillating multi tool... I have two set's of hand tools, one consisting of mostly high quality german tools (Knipex, Wera, Gedore, Stahlwille, Two Cherries...) and one is an almost complete, still added to, set of Snap-On tools.

Depending on what I do I put together my boxes.

Here's my Carhartt tool roll, I take it (almost) everywhere I go along with my Occidental Leather 5-1 Tool Holder, PPE (Snap-On and Oakley) and my trusty Randall knife #25.

Next my Bosch Professional Stuff, L-Boxx System

Snap-On Stuff, still growing.

And my new Festool CXS Set :)

Oh, and this is me. (Please forgive the Bosch in my hand ;) )

Kind regards,
Oliver

I am noticing a lot of blossom in your pics .. is there a green thumb there to go with your green tool desire?

Thank you two very much for the welcome! :)

Thanks for the heads-up regarding HolzWerken :) completely new blog to me!

Kev, well I like flowers, plants, trees ... I wouldn't go as far as to tell you I got a green thumb, but it works... The reason you see them in the picture is that I have the possibility to work outside basically year round - and I love to do so.

Kind regards,
Oliver

Hey Oliver,
Snap-On, Festool and Randall...nice stuff.  [thumbs up]

Curious, is there a local retailer for Randall or did you order the knife directly from the factory?

Hi,

this particular knife came to me through a dealer who happened to have it available at the time I was looking for a #25.

There is an official distributor for Germany/Europe though.

I never ordered directly from Randall because of the turnaround time (currently 5 years), back when I started collecting/using high-quality knives it was 3 or so - should have ordered one back then. ;)

Kind regards,
Oliver

Hey Oliver,
That's interesting. I purchased a Model 8 over 30 years ago and at that time the wait was 1 1/2 - 2 years. Randall has since moved into a larger building and has hired additional staff and now the wait is 5 years. [eek]

Yeah, realistically it's 5 years. The website already says 4 years, so order today, get it in 2019. I wouldn't bet on it though, they have a lot of orders... ;) But then again, Randall is straight forward about it and the prices, if you order directly, are still about 1 weeks pay of a working man - just like it has been ever since. And that even though the custom/handmade knife market is volatile as it hasn't been for a very long time, talk about honor and integrity. Add the very good craftsmanship and materials and you know why only a Randall knife is a Randall knife.

It's among my absolute favorites from my user knives/collection.

Kind regards,
Oliver

Actually Oliver,
Say I paid $225 (I'm pretty sure) for the knife in 1985, calculating for inflation, the new price should be around $499. Randall is  quoting a stock model at $360 so the prices have actually gone down a little in the intervening years. Who'd have thought?

This is the place to come to learn how to remodel too.  There's guys on here that will help you step-by-step to remodel your whole checking account.  Some of us believe that even though you don't need a particular Festool now you probably will in the future so it's best to be ready.  So save yourself a lot of hassle and just do like sittingelf did and buy one of everything.  He definitely made the rest of us jealous.
